Apple fruit family day profiled in Sun-Sentinel's Boynton Forum Newspaper

February 19, 2014

The ninth annual Children & Parents' Day, which celebrates the apple with a day of interactive workshops, arts and crafts and cooking demonstrations for the whole family, is set for Sunday as a prelude to National Nutrition Month.

"An ancient fruit is reintroduced in modern times with art and culinary experiences," said Lori J. Durante, the executive director of the Museum of Lifestyle and Fashion History that puts on the event.

Last year's event celebrated the pineapple.
"Food themes began last year but we always select a different theme to provide a new environment for the kids and their families," she said.

The event, sponsored by Target and the produce company Kingston Fresh, celebrates the apple with five local chefs and bakers creating apple-infused cuisines, apple-themed art events and an appearance in a specially-created apple orchard by Granny Smith.

Chefs, including Chrissy Benoit of The Little House; Phillip Herman of the Secret Garden Café and the Urban Farm; pastry chef Lara Fisher of Cakes by Lara; Anna Orlando of Palermo's Bakery; and baker Bonnie Brown of Bonnie's Best Bites, will create an apple-inspired, five-course farm-to-table buffet, tastings, cooking demos and children's cooking classes.

Benoit, who created her signature pineapple upside down cake last year, said, "I am excited to share fun facts and information with the children about where food comes from and what it does for us in a yummy way."
