The nonprofit Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion History’s tenth annual Children & Parents Day is set for Sunday, March 1, 2015. The theme for the tenth annual Children & Parents Day in Boynton Beach, Florida is celebrating the Mango Fruit, National Nutrition Awareness Month and the State of Florida’s Viva Florida initiative as mango farming connects with Florida’s agriculture history.


“This lively family day event has evolved to incorporate healthy eating presentations, culinary demos, kids cooking classes; and arts for kids and their families,” says Lori J. Durante, Executive Director/Chief Curator for the Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion History.

The Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion History’s tenth annual program is sponsored by style doyenne Iris Apfel, and Target, Kingston Fresh, Coca-Cola, Blue Bell Creameries, Patricia Ann Ravo Fund and Boris & Edith Rueger Fund. The Children & Parents Day’s Resident Chef is Juniper Torres of Someone’s In The Kitchen Catering in West Palm Beach and she will be creating the mango-infused all-you-can eat buffet and conduct a kids cooking class. Mango pastries will be created by pastry chef Anna Orlando of Palermo’s Bakery in Boynton Beach and baker Bonnie Brown of Bonnie’s Best Bites will also conduct kids cooking classes and prepare a 3-D mango cake.

The event will feature mango-infused recipes from Target and the National Mango Board. Students from South Tech Culinary Academy in Boynton Beach will be assisting the chef and bakers with creating the unique mango-laden recipes and the kids cooking classes.

The Artist-in-Resident for the tenth annual Children & Parents Day is Julia Longwell of Lake Worth who will lead interactive mango-theme art-making. The artist-in-resident Julia Longwell is a painter and photographer from New York, New York who currently residents in Lake Worth, Florida. In 2003 she earned her BFA in Painting from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. After graduation she traveled to many countries in Central America, spending a year in El Salvador working in rural school districts to raise awareness of ecological issues thru art objects. Julia has had solo exhibitions in Dallas, Texas; West Palm Beach, Florida and Lake Worth, Florida and has been in many group shows in New York and Florida.
Other local artists who will engage children in arts activities are Inge Behrens of Boca Raton; and artists Betty Wilson and Linda Manganaro of Artisans on the Ave Gallery in Lake Worth.

Florida Farm Bureau Federation will also be participating with interactive programs at the tenth annual Children & Parents Day. Farming in Florida was primary when Florida became an official State in 1845. The engagement of local farmers, artists and chefs will allow children and families in attendance at Children & Parents Day to learn about careers in those fields too.

The mango fruit theme for the tenth annual Children & Parents Day will include art, history, culinary, nutrition and agriculture. The mango fruit theme will be incorporated in all aspects of the all-day event that involves, arts and crafts workshops conducted by local artists, storybook reading by the “Mango Farmer,” face painting, souvenir photos under the “mango tree,” cooking demos and kids cooking classes hosted by local chefs.

The 2015 Children & Parents Day program also supports First Lady Michelle’s Obama’s Let’s Move Campaign and Chefs Moves to Schools Campaign to help end childhood obesity. The tenth annual Children & Parents Day will be held on Sunday, March 1, 2015 from 12 noon to 4pm at the historic Boynton Woman’s Club in Boynton Beach. This historic building was designed by the famed architect Addison Mizner and is on the National Registry of Historic Places. The mango theme for the tenth annual Children & Parents Day will include the following categories art, healthy eating, fitness, farming and Florida history. The fees are inclusive of all arts, crafts, entertainment, souvenir photos and allyou- can-eat buffet. The advance purchase discount rate is $15 per person/senior citizen/adult children age 3 and over; free for children under age 3. The annual Children & Parents Day was established in 2005 with the purpose of providing a fun-filled day of family adventures with arts, crafts and history education activities for children. MLFH also conducts the Taste History Culinary Tours of Historic Palm Beach County and the Narrated Bus Tours of Historic Palm Beach County.
